Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT) is a Non-profit Non-Government Organization which grew out of Nukkad – a street-based intervention program that worked with street children. SBT was established in the year 1988 after the success of Mira Nair’s film Salaam Bombay. The Trust provides support services for street and working children in central Delhi. Annually it reaches out to about 5000 children in providing shelter, food, medical aid, repatriation, sports, entertainment, counseling, education and vocational training skills, etc. The Trust has four full care residential programmes and 7 contact points for girls and boys. SBT is an implementing agency of Child line 1098: a 24 hour help line for children in distress supported by Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India.
Mission of Salaam Baalak Trust is to provide a sensitive and caring environment to street & working children and children in distress. It seeks to provide children a childhood and create an environment which allows them to explore and discover their talent and skill and to realize their rights.
This 20 years young organization has already supported more than 50000 children from all over the country. Some of them are now freelance photographers, dancers, choreographers, film makers, actors, puppeteers, and theatre directors. And many others are working in companies and agencies such as Matrix, Café Coffee Day, Benetton, Pizza Hut, Miditech, DS Constructions, and Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust with decent salary.
