Diana’s testimonial
Words can hardly express the time I have spend with the kids at the Salaam Balaak Trust in New Delhi. It was the best way to start my travel time in India. Never having been in India before, I felt at home with the other volunteers at the volunteers flat and with the SBT coordinator and staff. They were extremely warm and focused. It was easy and swift to start engaging in the SBT activities and thus I felt I could start giving a contribution straight away. My time was limited, 2 weeks and a half, so this was important. I spend about 2-3 hours teaching english and maths to some of the recent kids in the SBT home (primary school age) and quickly fell in love with them all. It was so rewarding to see their eyes shining in enthusiasm each time they got a concept, or an maths solution right, won a team game, or were able to communicate in english. I really enjoyed improvising games for them to play in teams so they could get stuff into their brains and relish in it! What i remember the most today is how enthusiastic and eager to learn they were (something that I do NOT remember from my own boring primary school years!). I have also spent time with the kids cared by SBT but still living in the streets. This was also very special and it gave an insight on what all the kids in SBT have possibly lived before they got taken in the SBT homes. I am very proud to have known and given my small contribution to this local, generous and amazingly grown-up organisation. Their work is exemplar and I hope to be able to return and put my vacation and skills to a good purpose once again!
